Itinerary
4 hrs driving | ~580 km round trip start
Depart early from Marrakech and tackle the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), the highest paved mountain pass in Morocco — the views over the High Atlas are spectacular. Stop for photos along the way.
- Aït Benhaddou (arrive ~12:30) — This UNESCO World Heritage ksar is one of Morocco's most iconic sights, used as a film set for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Cross the river on foot and climb to the top for panoramic views. Allow 1.5–2 hrs.
- Ouarzazate (arrive ~3:30) — The "Hollywood of Africa." Visit the Taourirt Kasbah and optionally swing by the Atlas Film Studios. Overnight in Ouarzazate.
~3.5 hrs driving
Head east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs (N10), one of Morocco's most scenic drives. Pass through Skoura's palm oasis and Kelaat M'Gouna, famous for its Valley of Roses (especially magnificent if visiting in April–May during the Rose Festival).
- Dadès Gorge (arrive ~2:00 PM) — Hike the winding road up the gorge for dramatic red rock formations. The so-called "monkey fingers" rock shapes are a highlight. Evening walk along the canyon floor.
~5 hrs driving total
The big day — you reach the Sahara!
- Todra Gorge (arrive ~10:00 AM) — Walk through this breathtaking narrow canyon where cliffs soar up to 300m on either side. Cool even in summer. Stop for mint tea at a riverside café.
- Rissani (arrive ~2:30 PM) — Ancient caravan town and historic birthplace of the Alaoui dynasty (Morocco's royal family). Browse the lively souk for dates, spices, and Berber crafts.
- Merzouga / Erg Chebbi (arrive ~5:00 PM) — The golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150m high. Arrive in time for a camel trek into the dunes at sunset, then spend the night in a luxury desert camp under a canopy of Saharan stars.
~9 hrs driving
- Wake before dawn for a magical Sahara sunrise over the dunes — absolutely unmissable. Enjoy a traditional Berber breakfast at camp.
- Begin the long drive back to Marrakech, retracing the scenic route through Rissani, Tinghir, and over the Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka.
- Arrive Marrakech by evening (~7–8 PM).
